Buhari’s two years in office is commendable, says cleric

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, has said it is too early to asses President Buhari’s government.The cleric, who spoke at the celebration of the 51st World Communications Day held at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, said President Buhari could not have done better as a civilian president.

The archbishop of Lagos, who was represented at the event by Very Rev. Msgr. Bernard Okodua of Mainland Region, said: “Many people have different impression about the last two years of Buhari’s administrtaion. When he assumed office, many believed he would do better, but as it is now, there is no magic anywhere. Our president has good intention for the nation, but how this intention will be translated into action is a different matter.

“We can say it’s a bit too early to judge his administration, those who were there before him were there for eight years, he has only spent two years, we cannot say he has not done anything, but perhaps, people are in hurry, because they want immediate changes, which is not possible. We have known him in the past to be a thorough person, a man of his word and an honest person and that’s why people wanted him there.

“We can say that he has not done so badly as a leader, maybe if he was military leader he would have done things differently as he is doing now. Rather than apportion blames, we as a church wish his administration well and pray that Nigeria succeeds. Our leaders need the grace of God and encouragement from the people. But those who are known not to be doing well should retrace their steps.”
