President Muhammadu Buhari has tasked the nation’s universities to collaborate with the private sector to produce sound graduates that will be 21st century-compliant.

Buhari, in his keynote address at the 50th convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), announced government’s resolve to constantly dialogue with university unions to avert strikes.

He lamented the huge gap between the ivory tower and industries, saying there’s urgent need to address the trend.

Represented by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Abubakar Rasheed , the president lamented the constant disruption of academic activities in tertiary institutions due to disputes between government and unions, saying his administration would henceforth meet regularly with the latter to stabilise the sector.

His words, “Our administration believes in the imperative of a sound education system for national development. We recognise the place of our intellectuals to undertake cutting edge research that will address the challenges of development and contribute to making life better.”

The three-day event climaxed with the conferment of emeritus professorship and honorary doctorate degrees on the founder and chairman of Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia; former Minister of Works and Housing, Lateef Okunnu (SAN); and the General Overseer, Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) ministries, Dr. Daniel Olukoya.

In their separate remarks, the honourees lauded the institution for the honour and appealed to government at all levels to pay greater attention to education.

Ovia, who canvassed private sector partnership in the funding of education, said there must be greater collaboration to properly reposition the sector.
