President Muhammadu Buhari has tasked university administrators to be frugal and avoid waste of resources.

Buhari made the call at the weekend during the second convocation of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun in Uvwie Local Council of Delta State.

He said: “I admonish university administrators across the country to imbibe our policy of frugality in order to avoid wastages.

“I, therefore, sound this warning that we will not condone corruption in whatever guise. The very scarce resources that are made available must be judiciously utilised to give value to the system.

“Nigeria has continued to be a net importer of refined petroleum products in addition to its poor level of electricity generation. I task the university and other agencies to rise and surmount these daunting challenges through the establishment of modular refineries and sustainable power generation to take this country to the next level.”

Besides, the President, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Onwuka,said the take-off grant for the university would be released but urged prudent use of the funds by the management of the institution.

He also challenged FUPRE to be a catalyst for greater innovation and pacesetter for technological revolution in the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor and Emir of Zamfara, Alhaji Attahiru Mohammed Ahmad, has urged the Federal Government to urgently commence the implementation of the letters of the Act in funding the university to truly reflect its position as the first specialised petroleum university in Africa and the sixth in the world, noting that the university is pivotal to the attainment of the local development in manpower development.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akii Ibhadode, on his part, urged the oil and gas firms and the Federal Government to challenge the universities with relevant tasks in oil and gas operation, saying that the institution has experienced hands to solve any problem in oil and gas operation.
