Fresh indications emerged, yesterday, that the lingering face-off between President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly over the 2016 budget might be resolved this week.

It was gathered from National Assembly sources that a meeting earlier scheduled to take place between the leadership of the National Assembly and the President to resolve the matter was only rescheduled to a later date and not cancelled.

According to a source, all stakeholders to the budget issue are now ready and willing to make any compromise ‎that would result in early resolution of the matter.

“The speculation about the cancellation of a meeting between leaders of the National Assembly and the President cannot be true because ‎we are very much in touch and in contact with one another. A rescheduled meeting should not be mistaken for a cancellation.”

“One thing that is very clear is that both arms of government (Executive and Legislative) are there for the people of Nigeria. So, none of them would want the economy to continue to suffer without a solution that promotes the interest of the people. This is why we cannot expect anything short of an effort to get the budget crisis quickly resolved,” the source said.

‎He disclosed that President Buhari might still sign the budget before the end of this week because, according to him, all parties to the matter have admitted that there were lapses in the document.
