Says players are well motivated to beat Bafana Bafana
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appealed to Nigerians to show more support to the Super Eagles in their quest to win the Egypt 2019 African Cup of Nations.

NFF Secretary General, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who spoke with The Guardian yesterday in Cairo, said though the team had been well motivated to beat Bafana Bafana of South Africa in tomorrow’s quarterfinal match, the team still need more support to achieve the goal.

“We are very grateful for the support Nigerians have given the team so far in this competition, but we ask for more,” Sanusi said. “This is a big competition and the team needs the prayer and moral support of all Nigerians. We are very grateful to the Federal Government for believing in the team and us. We also appreciate all top government officials who came to Egypt to support the team.”

The NFF scribe acknowledged that tomorrow’s game against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa would be tough considering the form of the South Africans in the competition. “But we have a great team that is capable of beating the South Africans and winning the title for Nigeria.

“The players are very happy with what the NFF has done, especially their preparations for this competition. I don’t want to talk so much on financial motivation for the team, but I can confirm to you that the players are well motivated up till today,” he stated.

Going by the head-to-head encounters between the two countries, Nigeria stands a better chance of beating Bafana Bafana in tomorrow’s clash. In 1992, Nigeria thrashed South Africa 4-0, and drew 0-0 a year later in Johannesburg. The Super Eagles won 2-0 in the year 2000, and in 2004, recorded two victories against the Rainbow nation, first a 4-0 win in Nigeria before another 2-1 victory away.

In 2008, Nigeria recorded another 2-0 win over South Africa before a I-O victory away in Johannesburg. In 2013, the Super Eagles were 2-0 better than South Africa in Johannesburg. It was the same scenario in 2014, when the Super Eagles won 3-1 and drew 0-0 away. In 2015, the Super Eagles drew 0-0 away, but in 2017, the Bafana Bafana caused a major upset by beating the Super Eagles 2-0 in Uyo in the their first leg of the qualifier for the 2019 AFCON. The second leg in South Africa in 2018 ended 1-1.
