The Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has urged the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, to be cautious of statements capable of hurting the nation’s image.

The Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has urged the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, to be cautious of statements capable of hurting the nation’s image.NIPR stated this yesterday at its General Meeting, while reviewing the comment of Magu in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, when he declared Lagos and Rivers states as centres of money laundering in the country.

The Institute described the comment as a weighty charge without any factual evidence to back it up, noting that such might heap a collateral-damage on the polity. In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the chapter, Mr. Chinedum Emeana, the body noted that the statement on two of Nigeria’s maritime, oil, gas, financial and economic hub is also capable of limiting its ability to vie for scarce foreign investment capital.

According to him, reputation is a key-determining factor for serious investors and lenders. “Anything that negatively impacts reputation of a government is a direct threat on the ability of such a government to create jobs, provide infrastructure and generally achieve socio-economic objectives,” he stated.

He added that while NIPR supports efforts to tackle and eradicate economic and financial crimes in the country, the EFCC should be circumspect in its action and statements in fulfilling its constitutional role so as not to inadvertently heap collateral-damage on the polity.
