Bauchi court sentences man to death by hanging
Justice Yelim S. Bogoro of the Bauchi State High Court Number 9 said that Idris was dragged to the court by the State Director Public Prosecutions, Barrister Dawud Yakubu, who charged him with culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the Criminal Code.
Dawud told the court that on September 14, 2012, the accused called the deceased Asiya Mohammed into his room, with the intention to rape her. When she refused he used his knife to cut her head, put the head inside a poly-bag and threw it inside the water channel.
He said the body of the deceased was recovered and taken to the General Hospital Darazo for postmortem before it was later handed over to her parents for burial.
He called five witnesses and presented the axe and knife that he used to Asiya’s head as exhibit and the witnesses testified that he made a confessional statement to them.
In her judgment Justice Bogoro said the confessional statement of the accused was direct and held that the prosecution has proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. She, therefore, sentenced the accused to death by hanging.
She said: “ I hereby sentence you to death to be hanged by the neck till you die” adding that he has the right to appeal within 30 days.
