The Chief of Defence Staff,Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, has again stressed the urgent need for a more enhanced partnership of the military of countries of the Lake Chad Basin sub-region, to crush the Boko Haram sect.

Badeh made the call yesterday in Abuja at the opening of the extraordinary summit of Chiefs of Defence Staff of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and Benin, held to review the security situation and emergency development plan in the region.

He said the menace of the terrorists has led to untold hardship on the inhabitants of the areas they unleashed their attacks in. He added: “in this regard we shall continue to condemn the apprehensive and atrocious activities of the Boko Haram in our country.

This therefore brings to the fore the urgent need for closer collaboration between us to curb this menace through the operationalisation of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

“if there is anytime for us to rise in one voice irrespective of our differences, it is now. “It is very important for us to build enduring structures that will have pragmatic value on the LCBC member nations and Benin. I therefore call for the immediate operationalisation of the MNJTF (Multi-National Joint Task Force).”

Badeh said the meeting is intended to facilitate and also appraise the “implementation of the strategic direction for the operationalisation of the MNJTF”, which the meeting of the Head of States and governments of the region will ratify tomorrow when they meet.”

While commending the security services of the region for their doggedness and courage in confronting the terrorists, Badeh said the meeting will help them all because they are primary decision makers in the security infrastructure of their various countries, “resolve the thorny issues of terrorism, streamline our collective responses and agree on far reaching decisions that will give a focus to our collaborative efforts

The Defence Ministry which was represented by its Permanent Secretary Aliyu Ismaila while acknowledging that the meeting was a follow up to the others held to work out the modus operandi towards addressing the security situation in the sub-region, he noted the selfless support and unrelenting efforts at actualizing the modus operandi by the MNJTF in the LCBC sub-region.

“It also reinforces the resolve of the LCBNC member states including Benin Republic to tackle Boko Haram.

Therefore I will implore you to take a holistic look at the draft report so as to fill in the gaps where they exist for subsequent presentation to the Heads of government of the LCBC who will eventually ratify and approve for implementation.” The meeting was attended by the CDS’ of Cameroon, Lt-Gen.

Rene Claude-Meka, Niger Lt-Gen Garba Seyni, Tchad Lt-Gen Brahimi Seid Mahamat, and Benin represented by Brig-Gen Laurent Amoussou. It wraps up today .
