Atiku Abubakar urges love among Nigerians
• Okowa, Fayemi Preach Peaceful Co-existence
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said that Nigerians must pay keen attention to the message of love, peace and sacrifice, which Jesus Christ preached during his time on earth.
In his Christmas message, which he titled, “Love is the Gift of the Season, Abubakar regretted that, “Over the past months, a number of dark forces have combined to accentuate divisions in our country. In the areas of politics, religion and tribe, there seem to have been constant fractiousness and restiveness, with people of different groups exchanging threats or actual harm. That is why we need to remember the love that Jesus Christ taught.
“We must love our neighbours as ourselves, do good to them and mean them well, whether or not they belong to our group. Nigeria cannot move forward as a country until each and every one of us realises that what is good for one should also be good for the other,” said Abubakar.
The former vice president stressed: “We must seek peace with all mankind, as Jesus taught. We must be our brothers’ keeper. We must realise that it is only in an atmosphere of peace that we can expect to lay the solid foundation for prosperity.”
On his part, Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, wants Christians to reflect on the virtues and teachings of Jesus Christ in their lives so that the country, and the entire world will be a better place for people.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Ehiedu Aniagwu, Okowa tasked Christians to pray for greater peace, love, unity, peaceful co-existence and progress in the country
“As the world celebrates Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I congratulate all Christians for witnessing yet another Christmas season. I advise all of you to use the festive period for sober reflections and total spiritual renewal and devotion towards living in peace and harmony with adherents of other religions.”
Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, says it is important for Nigerians to embrace the virtues of love, charity and peaceful co-existence that the Christmas celebrations symbolises.
Fayemi in a goodwill message signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Yinka Oyebode, said, “As we celebrate, we should continue to extend hands of love and live as one big family, irrespective of our social, political and religious leanings, and trust God for a better tomorrow and a greater country.”
