Former Niger Delta warlord, Ateke Tom and Department of State Services (DSS) have prevented a protest against Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) operations in Onne, Rivers state.

The protest was planned by Rivers State Youth Federation to draw attention to the plan by SNEPCO to relocate its operation from the Oil and Gas Free Zone, Onne, to Lagos.

Scores of youths had gathered in Onne yesterday and were about marching on the SNEPCO supply base at Onne when Tom and the DSS intervened and prevailed on them to allow dialogue before the planned protest.

President of Rivers State Youth Federation, Saviour Patrick, who led the aggrieved youths, said if SNEPCO leaves Onne, Rivers State to Lagos, it would lead to loss of over 5,000 jobs.
