A student of the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAPOLY), Bauchi State, Alhamdu Ezekiel, was yesterday crushed to death on his way to campus just about a kilometer to the school gate on the Bauchi-Jos Road. He was killed by a vehicle heading to Jos in the early hours of Monday while riding on his personal motorcycle.

According to an eyewitness, Janet Yakubu, Ezekiel was trying to access the road from New GRA junction before he ram into a moving vehicle that was on top speed. The deceased was a ND 2 student of the Department of Mass Communication, preparing to write his final examination before his untimely death.

The Head of Department, Mass Communication, Malam Nazif Abba Pali, told The Guardian that the deceased was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he died few hours after the accident.

“The incident was caused by this abandoned road (Bauchi-Jos Road) where two vehicles have to share one lane. He wanted to link the road but because the road is two narrow, you can see the condition of this place. Many people die on this same road almost everyday. We call on the government to please complete this major road,” he said.

It would be recalled that on October 10, another male student was knocked down by a car at night on his way from a club while an employee of the polytechnic was also crushed directly opposite the school gate in 2016.

The residents of Wunti-Dada area, the institution’s host community, have expressed their dissatisfaction over the state of the road, calling on the state government to complete the project, which it started though it is a federal government road.

Abubakar Sani, a business owner in the area, also lamented government’s neglect of the major road leading to two neighbouring states.
