Aswani market in Lagos records low turnout at Sallah
The popular Aswani market in Lagos yesterday recorded low patronage due to very low turnout of buyers.
Though traders complained about the economy, majority blamed the poor turnout on the Muslim festival.
Aswani is a popular bend-down select market, located in Isolo.
It is an open-market for second hand clothes, among other household items.
New and quality items are not impossible to find around as well.
It attends to the wishes of teeming population in Lagos; a market for all, both for retailers and wholesalers.
The Guardian learnt that the Tuesdays-only market was usually full but on this occasion, had about 30 per cent of turnout.
One of the traders, Nonso Amadi, sells ladies wears. Amadi said the market was “unexplainable”.
He said: “No customer. We’ve been here since morning but we didn’t see any buyer. Today’s market is extremely tough.
I cannot even compare how I sell on a normal day with today. That’s how bad it is today.
“On a normal day, I sell very well. I decided to use a strategy today by selling my dress N100 but there is still no customer.
All I will say is that today is not good.
The gain I have today is like 30 per cent of what I gain on a normal day,” he said.
Chinyere Ordu sells baby wears. Ordu told The Guardian that the sales were manageable; though not like the regular Tuesday market because of the Sallah.
“We are not seeing customers today; the market is scanty. Well, that’s how it is supposed to be during Sallah.
We don’t normally see customers, and market is not always full like that because of the festival.
I was even planning to sell less today just to get more customers but I did not see anyone to sell to,” she said.
