ASUU: UNILORIN opts out, says it didn’t get notice

•Identifies with demands of national body

Expectedly, the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has opted out of the exercise, saying the national leadership of the union was yet to lift its year 2001 severance proclamation against the local ASUU.

According to its chairman, Dr. Raheem Usman, in a chat with The Guardian yesterday in Ilorin, maintained that the national body allegedly failed to serve the local union copies of the referendum that precipitated the current strike.

He, however, lauded the union for its “reasonable demands”, describing them as rational issues that should be urgently addressed by a proactive government.

Usman said: “UNILORIN is not on strike. As you are aware, the ASUU in the year 2001had severed its relationship with us here. Besides, the notices of the congress leading to the strike were not served on us. For as long as the severance order remains, we should not expect any communications from them.

“However, we identified with the issues being demanded for by the national ASUU. Moreover, we want the concerned bodies or government to honour them for greater academic heights. “

According to the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs of the institution, Kunle Akogun, “normal activities on the campus are smoothly ongoing.”
