ASUU calls for sanctions against Morocco to end colonization of Western Sahara Republic

Nigeria educationThe Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on African states to impose economic sanctions on Morocco to end the colonization of Western Sahara.

ASUU also tasked African countries to use their bilateral relations and act individually and collectively to exert all forms of pressure on Morocco to end its illegal occupation of Western Sahara Republic.

Specifically, the union called on the Federal Government to ban the importation of sardine products from Morocco into Nigeria as part of economic sanctions to make it yield to demands to grant autonomy to Western Saharawi.

The sardine business is said to worth 30million US dollars annually.

It also wants Nigeria and other countries to muster the courage to break diplomatic ties with Morocco which they say has distanced itself from the African Union by withdrawing its membership.

While asking Nigeria to Ban importation of any goods from Morocco and companies exploiting resources of the Saharawi people, ASUU called for the establishment of Nigeria-SADR bi-national commission to reinforce cooperation between the two countries.

Morocco forcefully occupied 80percent of Western Sahara Republic 40 years ago exploiting their phosphate-rich territory with off-shore oil deposits while the people have been denied independence after Spain which colonized it handed off in 1975.

A communiqué signed by Dr Dipo Fashina at the end of a 3-day International conference themed “Towards the Liberation of Africa’s Last Colony” organized by ASUU condemned strongly the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara describing it as a crime against humanity in the 21st century.

The communiqué also asked the United Nations to hold, without further delay, the referendum for self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the relevant UN and OAU resolutions further reaffirmed by the African Union.

ASUU also condemned the ‘shameful’ role played by France at the Security Council in supporting Morocco’s expansionism in Western Sahara and in opposing all initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict on the basis of International legality in violation of article 24 of the UN Charter.
