The President, Board of Trustees, Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), Chief Philip Asiodu, yesterday, asked government to prioritise sanctions as a means for controlling environmental pollution.

He said such measure would be a viable strategy for promoting environmental sustainability amid increasing dirty state of cities in Nigeria. He stated this at the 2018 yearly Walk for Nature with the theme, ‘Beat pollution, live a sustainable lifestyle,’ in Lagos.

Asiodu maintained that pollution has become a major challenge in mega cities, hence the need to sensitise the public on sustaining best practices, especially use of plastic materials, which litter every nook and cranny, including the oceans, thus affecting marine lives survival.

He lamented disappearance of sanitary inspectors, whose responsibility was to apply sanctions on anyone who violates the environment through indiscriminate dumping of dirty materials and living in unkempt premises. He called for return of the inspectors for a safe and healthy environment.

The state Environment Commissioner, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, who represented Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, said there was need to shift to a more conscious approach to consumption and interaction with the environment through lifestyles that optimise use of earth’s natural resources with minimal impact on the environment.
