El-Rufai urges troops to remain apolitical
The Nigerian Army yesterday launched Operation Python Dance III, also known as Egwu Eke III, in Kaduna.

It said that law and order would be maintained as the country inches towards the 2019 general elections.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Mohammed, gave the assurance during the flag-off of the exercise at the headquarters in Rigasa, Igabi Local Council of the state.

The state governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, who flagged off the campaign, urged the troops to remain apolitical in discharging their duties.

El-Rufai, represented by his special adviser on security matters, said the sustained military offensive against Boko Haram by the armed forces, in synergy with other security agencies, had greatly degraded their capabilities, which has compelled them to relocate to remote areas as their hideouts.

He said that as the general elections draw near, the need for security agencies to be on top of their duties against criminal groups in the state and the country at large becomes more expedient.

He, therefore, assured the army of his administration’s support in the discharge of its constitutional duties.

The GOC said the exercise aimed at combating banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities within 1 Division Area of Operations and the nation at large.

According to him, the exercise is also meant to ensure that law and order are maintained as we approach the general elections.

“To this end, this Division has put in place necessary security measures to ensure that the dissident groups are denied freedom of actions to carry out their nefarious activities and to also ensure a hitch-free 2019 general elections,” he said.
