Aregbesola names Osun varsity after Ige, appoints Alakija chancellor

In a dramatic move yesterday, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has renamed all the tertiary institutions in the state, including the Osun State University (UNIOSUN), which is named after the late Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief James Ajibola Ige.

Other institutions renamed were Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke now Bisi Akande College of Technology; Osun State; Polytechnic Iree, now Sunday Afolabi Polytechnic; College of Education, Ila-Orangun, now Adeyemi Oyeduntan College of Education and College of Education, Ilesa, now Lawrence Omole College of Education.

Others are UNIOSUN College of Law, Ifetedo now Kayode Esho College of Law;‎ College of Social Sciences and Management, Okuku, now Olagunsoye College of Social Sciences, Okuku; College of Agriculture, Ejigbo, now Isiaka Adeleke College of Agriculture, Ejigbo; ‎College of Education Ipetu-Ijesa, now Ezekiah Oluwasanmi College of Education and College of Humanities and Culture, Ikire, now Eniola Atanda College of Humanities and Culture.

The change in nomenclature of the nine-year-old university established by former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola came yesterday during the investiture of the first female chancellor in the country, Dr. (Mrs.) Folorunso Alakija and the fourth and fifth convocation of the university.

Aregbesola, who is visitor to the university, extolled the virtues of Ige and his immense contributions to nation’s development, saying naming the university after him is meant to immortalise the astute lawyer and political icon.

Speaking yesterday during her investiture as the second Chancellor of Osun State University, Osogbo, Alakija urged women to always embrace education and allow their children to be properly trained, saying doing so would enhance their personality and make easier for them to be recognised in the country.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Oguntola Jelil Alamu in his speech, enumerated the various achievements recorded by the institution in the areas of infrastructural development, research, teaching and community relation.

He disclosed that two alumni of the university who excelled in their post-graduate studies undertaken abroad had been pencilled down for employment by the university.

Besides, Chairman of the Governing Council of the university, Prof. Obafemi Ajibola, said the management would strive hard to be innovative in its activities and make accountability, openness and excellence its watchword.
