Ogun State government yesterday signed a multi-billion naira rail network contract with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCEEC).

The contractors are to construct rail lines across the major cities in the state as part of the government’s efforts to ensure easy transportation of goods and passengers across. The project will be the first of its kind in Ogun State.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun who signed the contract on behalf of the government in Abeokuta, the state capital, assured that his administration would complete all on-going projects as soon as possible. The projects include the massive six-lane road, model schools and overhead bridges.

Amosun also disclosed plan by his administration to soon embark on massive rural road construction through out the state.

The governor who has just been re-elected for a second term in office stated: “We are going to hit the ground running. We are going to embark on construction of intra-state rail network, but we are starting first with inter-city”.

According to him, the rail project is very necessary in view of the fact that Ogun could boast of highly concentrated industries as well as numerous religious centres which attract thousands of worshipers from both within and outside the state on monthly basis.

Amosun expressed belief that the project, apart from reducing heavy pressure on the state roads, would also lessen traffic problems on the major roads.

The governor charged the contractors not only to ensure quality job, but complete the project on schedule.

The Chairman of the CCEEC, Mr. Cao Bao Yong, who signed the contract on behalf of his company promised: “We will not only deliver a quality project but we will deliver it on schedule.”]

It must be planned in a manner that the network can link other neighbouring States that have the same initiative, as well as link to current and future national rail corridors. Don’t just perceive the Chinese as the expert without your meaningful brief. However, it is a good idea.

Dear Governor Amosun, please permit me to say that before we face the issue of gigantic railroad connections, let us construct and connect our local governments to every town, village and crany with good roads. For example, before the advent of Lagos to Badagry express road, if you travelling to and from Badagry, you would have to take the Badagry/Ado-Odo/Ota Road. This road have since been so neglected. This needs to be done with priority. Also, the Badagry/Ilaro/Abeokuta Road was the key connector to the entire Western Region and it was the key road that brought in Missionaries and development to the Western Regional axis of Nigeria. This road has also been neglected. The Agbara/Igbessa/Abeokuta/Sokoto Express road was meant to be the major link to the Free Export Zone on the South West of Ogun State but for a journey of 26 miles or under, one would spend over 2 hours if not more. Please Mr. Governor, kindly look into the issue of Road Development first before thinking of the railway. Lest I forget, the Lagos/Ilaro/Idogo railroad needs to be resuscitated. This is a key supply route for fresh vegetables and citrus fruits for which Ilaro and Idogo in Ogun South west has a comparative advantage. We pray for God’s support for your administration as you consolidate on your developmental projects for the betterment of the people of Ogun State in your Second Term of office – Amen. Up Amosun, Up Buhari/Osinbajo, Up Nigeria!!!
