Ajayi Crowther varsity VC urges universities to be self-reliant

• School graduates 348, as Alaafin, Ajimobi’s wife bag doctorate degrees
• Plans to phase out third classcategory
• 26 institutions in N’West benefit from TETFund sensitisation exercise

The Vice Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Dapo Asaju, has asked Nigerian universities to make sure they are self-reliant and be prudent in the handling of resources available to them.

Asaju, who spoke at the weekend during the institution’s pre-convocation press conference, said the school’s management does not receive any form of grant, subvention or financial support from its proprietors or elsewhere, but still able to pay its members of staff not later than the 27th of every month.

At the 9th convocation ceremony, which began on October 6, 2017 and would run till Friday, October 13, 2017 at the institution’s new hall, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi; Chairman, AMNI Petroleum, Dr. Tunde Afolabi and wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, would be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.

Asaju, who stated that third class category of degree award would be phased out from next year, noted that in spite of the paucity of funds, the management was able to execute projects that have helped to improve the physical and infrastructural outlook of the institution through direct labour.

In another development, at least 26 federal and state tertiary institutions in the North-West geo-political zone of the country have benefitted from the ongoing sensitisation and awareness exercise being carried out by Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Dr. Abdullahi Bichi Baffa, stated this during his team’s visit to various campuses of the institutions in the zone.He also told participants at the various campuses of the institutions that the seminar became necessary to get rid of all the encumbrances encountered in accessing intervention allocations from TETFund.
