Aggrieved former aluminum workers call for BPE’s probe

Former Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) workers have called for the immediate probe of the activities of the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) in view of the lingering crisis bedeviling the company.



This came in reaction to a report in The Guardian of June 8, credited to the Director General of BPE, Mr. Alex Okoh, that ALSCON will resume production before the end of 2018.

The workers said this was not feasible, given various unresolved issues on ground. They also said the Director General should be sacked for misleading the presidency.




The immediate past chairman of ALSCON, Comrade Sunny James, said that after much negotiation, the Federal Government through the BPE and ALSCON is indebted to the former workers to the tune of N2.3billion, following a signed agreement between BPE, the Federal Government and the workers.


Speaking on behalf of the workers, one of their leaders, Mr. Ubong Akro, said: “We wonder how ALSCON can start production by the end of the year. It’s not possible.
