For the third time, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) by the Cross River State government on its 260 km superhighway project has failed international standard.

This was disclosed at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Ministry of Environment yesterday in Calabar.

Even though all the stakeholders who spoke at the meeting agreed that the superhighway was necessary but a summary of the presentation by the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin said the EIA has not addressed contending issues and falls short of international standard and World Bank requirement.

The minister who was represented by the Director of EIA in the ministry, Mr. John Alonge said, “The ministry observed that the state government’s consultant to the project has not done a thorough job.”

Meanwhile, a Chinese organisation, China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Cooperation has showed interest in the superhighway project if the government approves its EIA report.
