Chairman of ‎the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration in the last Senate, Senator Smart Adeyemi, on Friday, announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC). Adeyemi, who had represented the Kogi West Senatorial District for eight years in the Upper Legislative Chamber between 2007 and 2015, anchored his decision to defect on the failure of the past PDP administrations to evolve people-oriented programmes. According to him, the resolve to abandon the PDP for the APC was born out of the conviction that the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was genuinely committed to reversing the socio-economic rot in Nigeria.

Surrounded by a group of APC Senators including Senator Abu Ibrahim from Katsina State at a press conference in Abuja, Adeyemi noted that he had reasons to have condemned the policies of the PDP administrations on grounds of total disconnect from the grassroots. He further urged Nigerians to support what he called “the effect of new socio-economic order of this administration” Seeking more understanding and patience with Buhari’s government, Adeyemi said: “We are mindful of the harsh economic situation in the country due to global economic recession and poor planning in the past. However, this administration must be supported to succeed because of the determination and sincerity to balance the books and balance the economy, must not fail”.

Lamenting the appalling state of affair‎s in his constituency despite his efforts as a Senator for eight years, Adeyemi said: “Kogi West has nothing to show towards improving the standard of living of our people by successive Kogi PDP governors. This neglect and poor performance of the PDP resulted into anti-party reactions, culminating in the victory of the ‎APC in Kogi State governorship election last year. “The situation in Kogi West, apart from the State capital, Lokoja, is very saddening to the extent that if those who died in the last forty years have the opportunity to resurrect, they will easily locate their houses and farms because nothing has actually changed”.
