The General Overseer, The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said that kidney is vital to the existence of any human being.

Adeboye, who stated this yesterday at the commissioning of a dialysis machine he donated to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, said it was heart-rending to see people suffering from kidney diseases.

He also promised to donate two more machines to the tertiary health institution before the end of the year.

The General Overseer, who emphasised that the glory of the teaching hospital must be restored, said: “When we were young, people did not think of going abroad for their treatment. They believed that once they come to UCH, they would be healed.

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, flanked by other senior officers of the institution and his wife, Dr. Bolanle, said that the UCH needed at least N100 billion to turn it around.

The CMD also urged the state government to pay more attention to secondary and primary healthcare to reduce the burden being shouldered by the tertiary health institutions, saying that this would enable the UCH to focus on its core mandate.

He also urged well-meaning Nigerians to extend their generosity to the teaching hospital on provision of equipment, water, power supply, training and infrastructure.

According to him: “We commissioned the dialysis machine donated by the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. The equipment is a personal donation by Baba Adeboye and it is one of the many responses we got from various appeals made to wealthy and public-spirited Nigerians as well as corporate bodies.

“We need N100 billion to turn around the hospital because things have decayed in the hospital. Most of the pipes are leaking. Water doesn’t get to its destination. UCH needs help. It is not possible for government to provide all the needed funds and for infrastructure to adequately address the needs of the hospital. Government alone cannot do it. Funding is a major challenge in all government establishments. It has been intriguing how we got money to run the hospital. We pay a huge sum of money for the supply of electricity, buying diesel for our generators, and yet, we must meet the yearnings of our teeming patients.”
