Some Abuja residents have commended the present administration for its sincerity of purpose and anti-corruption stance while others advised that it should respect rule of law and always obey court orders.

The respondents expressed their views in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday while assessing the performance of the government so far.
Mr Sule Aliu, a Civil Servant, said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s actions in the last seven months, indicated that he was serious about rebuilding Nigeria.

“My evaluation of the Buhari government is positive; the change mantra of the administration has really manifested and the future looks bright.

“Government appears to be serious about returning Nigeria to its past glory by eradicating poverty and fighting corruption, and that is commendable.

“I can only advise that the government expedite action in solving the perennial fuel scarcity, and to improve on the wages of civil servants.

“Salaries and wages should be harmonised across all ministries, departments and agencies because we all work for the same government,’’ Aliu said.

Mr Haruna Yakubu, a post-graduate student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said that seven months was too early to assess the government’s performance.

“Though seven months is too early to assess to any administration, however, President Buhari appears to be on the right track.

“The effective fight against corruption and enormous progress made in the fight against insurgency are particularly encouraging.’’ he said.
He advised Nigerians across ethnic, religious and political divides to support the government’s effort to rebuild the country.

“Mr Abas Ibrahim, an Abuja-based pharmacist, commended the government for a “well- thought-out’’ 2016 budget.

“The policy statements, the anti-corruption fight, the 2016 budget, and the caliber of individuals in the cabinet are all clear indications that the government intends to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

“Though the economy looks gloomy due to the global crash in the price of crude, the president’s confidence and resolve to plug all loopholes are reassuring enough,’’ he said.

Also contributing, Mr Daniel Ibe, a newspaper vendor, also commended Buhari’s performance so far.

“I can only say so far so good; and I commend the president and his team for taking visible steps to re-direct the country.

“Also, considering the quality of Nigerians in the federal cabinet, I am confident that the agriculture, power, transport and solid mineral sectors will particularly excel,’’ he said.

However, Mr Sor Sen, an Abuja-based artist, advised that certain excesses of government should be checked.

‘’I can say that Mr President has performed fairly, but some actions of government officials need to be checked.

“For instance, the idea of not obeying court orders is dangerous for our democracy and should be checked.

“But I am particularly impressed with the 2016 budget, considering the fact that for the first time, education has a good allocation,’’ he said.

Mr Lawrence Abohan, a Researcher and Current Affairs Analyst, also advised Nigerians to be patient with the government.

‘’I will appeal to Nigerians to be patient with the president, considering the decay he inherited in government.

“ I will say that the president’s performance is not below expectation and anybody that expected anything different was probably expecting magic.
“I will, however, advise that government give absolute regards to the rule of law and court orders.

“This is because these are the parameters the international community will use to appraise performance,’’ Abohan said.
