The kidnapped chairman of the Cross River State chapter of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), Comrade Ben Ukpepi, has regained his freedom. The unionist, who was last week whisked away by his abductors from his home in Akpabuyo Local Council of the state, was released on Sunday night by the captors.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, DSP Irene Ugbo, yesterday confirmed the development in Calabar. She said: “Ukpepi has been freed. He is currently receiving treatment, and no ransom was paid for his release.”

However, it was alleged that the kidnappers had last Friday demanded a N20 million ransom to effect the labour leader’s freedom. The state NLC had also on Saturday accused the Governor Ben Ayade administration of not “taking necessary action to see to the release of Ukpepi”, threatening an industrial action in the process.
