A2J, Eastern Bar Forum seek Onnoghen’s confirmation as CJN

Justice Onnoghen

A group, Access to Justice (A2J), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to tell Nigerians his reasons for delaying the appointment of a substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The group insisted that Nigerians are entitled to know why he is taking, or not taking any line of action and assess whether the grounds and motives he asserts are legitimate, and are in the best interest of Nigeria.

“Already, there are escalating fears and speculations that there is an “ethnic” dimension to his foot-dragging in this matter. This is not good at all. The President must level with the Nigerian people and break this discomfiting silence on the appointment of a substantive CJN now,” says Joseph Otteh, A2J director in a statement yesterday.

The group however, pointed out that the clamour for a substantive CJN should be that he is the best person for the job and not just because he is next in line for the office, maintaining that the sector is in deep mess that requires capacity to deliver.

Similarly, the Eastern Bar Forum (EBF) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged acting President Yemi Osinbajo to forward the name of Justice Walter Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) without further delay.
