‘29,000 displaced Nigerians returned home in 2015’
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that about 29,581 Nigerians who fled their communities in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states over attacks by Boko Haram insurgents to Niger, Chad and Cameroun have returned to their homes.
The Head, Media and Public Relations of NEMA, Sani Datti, stated this in a report on Humanitarian Relief Interventions (HRI) by the agency yesterday in Abuja.
According to the report: “13,046 Nigerians returned from Niger Republic in May 2015 and were received at Geidam, Yobe State while between April and December 2015 NEMA received about 16,595 people who returned from Cameroun through the Sahuda border near Mubi in Adamawa State.
“Some of the Nigerians who fled to Niger, Chad and Cameroun were assisted by the Federal Government through NEMA to alleviate their suffering.
“The displaced people have also received humanitarian support from the host governments, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and Nigerians living in these countries.”
It added: “There are presently 20,804 Nigerians living in Chad, 80,709 in Cameroun and 138,321 in Niger Republic.”NEMA said the agency introduced a monthly Humanitarian Coordination Meeting, a forum consisting of relevant government agencies, United Nations organs and International Non-Government Organisations (INGOs) to analyse the causes of humanitarian situations, conduct assessment and identify areas of intervention.
The report added that due to the successes recorded by the military with the support of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents, the humanitarian challenge was being curtailed.
“The focus is gradually shifting towards reconstruction, rehabilitation, resettlement, recovery and the return of displaced persons to their communities. There are also plans to ensure that other Nigerian refugees in neighbouring countries return home,” said the report.
