A suspected herdsman at the weekend attacked a mother of two, Mrs. Florence Godday, on her cassava farm at Igbo Abo near Osi community in Akure North Local Council of Ondo State.

The victim narrated her ordeal: “I was about going home when I noticed the Fulani man on my farm. I was scared but greeted him and he replied. I sought his assistance in putting the firewood on my head, which he obliged. “But before I could thank him, he attacked me with his cutlass and macheted me on the head. Before I could question him or know what was happening, he gagged me and tore my clothes and I raised alarm. “Suspecting that the shout could attract other farmers around, he took to his heels with his blood-stained cloth.”

The victim added that she managed to get to the nearest community where they offered her another cloth, adding that her rescuers notified her Delta-State-born husband and member of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Thomas who later mobilised his men that led to the arrest and handing over of the culprit to the police.

She went on: “I can’t really explain the motive behind the attack by the man, maybe to kill me or to rape me but he removed all my clothes before I could raise the alarm after he had macheted me.”

Contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect had been granted bail, adding that investigation was ongoing. He, however, described the man as a scavenger who attempted to rape the victim and got her injured in the process.

Joseph stated: “The suspect is not a Fulani man but speaks Hausa. He is from Langtang in Plateau State but not a Fulani herdsman as claimed by the people. “He has been granted bail and asked to come back to the station today (Monday) while investigation is ongoing and will be charged to court at the conclusion of the exercise.”
