2019 Polls: Pro-Biafra agitators threaten campaigns in South East

Electioneering by aspirants of various political parties, especially those who may be seeking re-election in the South East might run into a hitch based on plots by pro-Biafra groups.

The Guardian gathered yesterday that pro-Biafra groups met in Nnewi last week and agreed to work together at making it difficult for politicians seeking re-election to campaign anywhere in the zone, alleging the politicians had sabotaged the Biafra struggle for political gains.
 
The groups were also said to have resolved to hold the political leaders of the zone responsible for the ordeal of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

On the list of politicians penciled for the group wrath are the governors of Enugu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Ebonyi, David Umahi; and Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu, who are seeking second terms in office. There was also a resolve to work against anybody that might be endorsed by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state.

But for the senator representing Abia South Senatorial district, Enyinnaya Abaribe, all other senators and House of Representatives members in the zone would also have their political campaigns resisted as well as their re-election frustrated.

A source at the meeting disclosed that the pro-Biafra groups have not forgiven the political leaders for the September 15, 2017 meeting held at the Government House, Enugu, where they announced the proscription of the activities of IPOB in the five South East states, saying it was the beginning of the “implementation of the programme to ensure that pro-Biafra groups were wiped out.”

The meeting, which was also attended by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, had said that banning the activities of the group was to stop rising tension in the zone.

It also directed governors of the various states to enforce compliance and urged IPOB and other aggrieved groups in the zone to articulate their position on national issues and submit same to the committee of governors.
