20 die in Benin-Onitsha road accident
Five beaten to death in Benue State
A road accident has claimed the lives of more than 20 passengers along Benin-Onitsha Road near Abudu in Edo State.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was said to have happened between Ugoneki and Evbuobanosa near Abudu, headquarters of Orhiomwon Local Council of the state.
About 90 per cent of the passengers in a commercial bus heading from Onitsha to Benin died in the carnage.
Eyewitness said the accident involved a truck with registration number FST 280 XR and an 18-seater Toyota bus with registration number MKD 492 XB.
Members of the Abudu Unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) who were alerted by villagers quickly mobilised to the scene of the accident for rescue operation.
The State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Samuel Odukoya, who confirmed the incident, said members of the Abudu unit of the command were deployed in the area for rescue operation.
Odukoya stated that four of the victims taken to a nearby hospital later died.
In another development, unidentified armed men on Wednesday invaded some communities in Mbayongo District of Katsina-Ala Local Council of Benue State and beat to death five persons at their separate residences.
The Guardian learnt that three of the persons killed live at Nagu settlement, one at Tse Gyudu and another victim at Tse Weryina, all in the smaller adjoining villages to Gbishe Ako.
A resident in the area, who pleaded anonymity, said none of the victims was found with bullet wounds but injuries of thorough beating.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Moses Yamu, said no arrest had been made but that investigation was still in progress to arrest the killers.
