Fast-rising Nigerian musician Rema is slowly yet steadily making his mark on the music scene as he continues to drop dope bangers.

The young star who is signed to Mavin Records on Monday had a chat with Manny Norte of Capital Xtra to whom he spoke extensively about losing loved ones, his growing music career, dealing with fame and more.

Rema who lost his father and older brother within a short time of each other disclosed that he was under pressure to raise money for his “great mom.”

On losing his dad and brother, Rema says,

“At some point things got hard and I had to man up…. I had to work hard because I lost my brother and my dad… I had to work hard.”

He added that he travelled to Ghana, worked on a beach and bought her a car.

His luck changed for the better when he made a freestyle to D’Prince’s ‘Gucci Gang.’ The freestyle got him the attention of MAVIN/Jonzing’s but he would be with Mavin Records for about 18 months before he was eventually signed to the label.

The “Dumebi” crooner who said he never goes to they gym but hardwork kept him in shape went on to discuss his experimentation with different sounds in his music. He says

“I like to explore. I don’t like going into the studio with this sense of giving the people what they expect. I just want to explore my spirituality and sound as a whole.”

“I tend to mix a whole bunch of cultures into one sound to make it have an impact in multiple zones across the world… I want to make the whole world dance. I’m not just doing it for Africa, I’m taking Africa along with me and sharing it to the world. Sometimes, people say I don’t sound ‘Afrobeats,’ but it has a taste of afrobeats in word, beat or flow…”

Rema whom many would agree has the success of his song “Dumebi” to thank for his rise to stardom also explained how he recorded the song that was released in March 2019.

The Headies Next Rated winner revealed that he was recording in August 2018 when he met producer, Ozedikus. The producer was frustrated by how nobody was picking up the beat that eventually became, ‘Dumebi.’

He decided to work with the beat and according to him, he didn’t write but ony ‘vibed’ to the beat via freestyle and during a session. With limited studio time, he wanted to come back to the incoherent parts the next day to put actual words in.

He never got to put those words in and the world has D’Prince to thank for this because while Rema was paying the song for Ozedikus, D’Prince walks in and advises Rema to leave the song in its original state, with the mumbling. The song was met with positive criticism upon its release.

On the song, Rema says:

“In the world, certain things don’t make sense till you make them make sense.”

Overwhelmed by the love he has been receiving since finding fame, the singer also said he was shocked by the reception he received in London, England and Paris, France.

The expansive interview also had Rema disclosing that neither drinks nor smokes, hates posting on social media and he hates taking selfies.

The bag of talent explained that that he would like to get into fashion and would rather post his music on social media than a gold chain or precious possession. To him, it’s easy to get addicted to likes and comments on social media.
