Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is defending the decision to cast Johnny Depp in the next Fantastic Beasts movie. The author says Depp’s personal life is private and should be respected.

Her announcement follows a backlash from fans who said they were unhappy about the circumstances of the actor’s divorce from Amber Heard – the couple’s marriage ended amid allegations of domestic abuse and blackmail.

In a statement on Rowling’s personal website, she said filmmakers had considered recasting Depp’s role as villain

Gellert Grindelwald, but decided against it, saying the circumstances of his divorce were private and should be respected.

Warner Bros. said in a statement it supported the decision to keep Depp.

The film will be the second of a five-movie spinoff from the blockbuster Harry Potter films.
