The eyes, they say, are the window to the soul. This may or may not be true. However, the area around your eyes are thin and delicate and need to be treated with tender loving care otherwise you may be faced with eye bags, dark, wrinkled or puffy eyes. Nobody wants that. The causes of the area around your eyes looking so terrible could be because of your genes, overexposure to the sun, stress or lifestyle factors. The ways to repair the eye area range from using home remedies, laser treatments, or surgery in extreme cases.

There are some ways, however, in which you can take proper care of your eyes:

1. Rest

Try and get as much sleep as you can. There is a reason for the recommended 8 hours of sleep at night. The period you sleep is the time your body uses to heal itself, especially your face. If you have difficulty falling asleep, turn off all your gadgets an hour before you go to sleep and you will sleep better. Always make sure your pillow cases are clean as it is bad for your face when you sleep with dirty sheets.

2. Drink water

You must drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday. Water will keep your skin more hydrated, regulates your body temperature and flush out the toxins from your body. This helps minimise acne breakouts. Hydrated skin is more flexible and this prevents fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Use eye cream

Eye cream is essential for everyone, regardless of gender. The skin under the eye is thin and delicate and needs much more hydration that moisturisers can provide. Enter eye cream. Eye creams do the job of moisturisers more effectively, in addition to minimising fine lines and wrinkles and preventing premature aging. Look for an eye cream with vitamin K, silicone and retinol.

4. Conceal the dark circles

It is easy to hide dark circles with makeup using concealer. Avoid concealers with salicylic or glycolic acid as these ingredients will dry out and irritate the under eye area.

5. Treat yourself
If you have an allergy or any other health problem, it may affect the area around your eyes. Treating the illness at hand will show great improvements in the way that your eyes look.

6. Homemade eye remedies
For dark circles, bags or puffy eyes, you can do the following while resting at home:

  1. Place cold cucumber slices over your eyelids.
  2. Place slightly warm green or chamomile tea bags over your eyelids for about 10 minutes.
  3. Place two raw potato slices over your eyelids for 20 minutes.
  4. Place a cold spoon over each of your eyelids. You can pre-chill the spoons in the freezer or ice water.

Always discuss with your dermatologist if these tips do not work, if you are mixing products, or if you are allergic to any of the products you are using.
