Productivity is not as most people think; a product of motivation. Motivation in the real sense is a product of productivity.

Starting something big and new always brings on a little nervousness-because a lot of thoughts tend to run through our memory. We tend to think things like; what are people going to think about this? What if I fail? What would people think of me after I have failed? Can I actually pull this through? Wouldn’t I be making the biggest mistake of my life?

Truth is, once you take action and start being productive, the creative energy to do more kicks in. Suddenly you no longer bother to fail, or care what people think about you. That creative energy strengthens you to do more. So that said, you become more motivated to do things when you are productive.

In the words of Robert D. Smith; “the next time someone tells you they have the secret to staying motivated, run! The secret already lies within you. It’s called doing something. Repeat after me—increase your productivity, then the motivation will follow”. Robert D. Smith is an author of over 20,000 Days crash course in living each day with maximum purpose and intensity-he also writes about entrepreneurship and personal growth.

Note these few tips about motivation:

Motivation never comes before productivity: Think about it. When do you feel more motivated? Before you start on a huge project, or after you’ve spent a little time really digging into it and getting clearer on your direction? As stated earlier, starting something big and new will always bring on a little nervousness with it. But once you start taking action and start being productive, the motivation to do more starts to set in.

There is no secret to motivation: Many people have been convinced on a foundation that says they have the magic secret that will sweep you off your shoes and get you into action. The simple fact is that the only secrets to accomplish great things is what you’ve known all along—work hard! When you keep at hard work and keep doing it, try it one way and get some feedback, come back at it from another angle, make a list, make a phone call, write an email, break down all the “must-do” tasks into manageable 15-minute chunks and start attacking them with massive action, then you will be productive!

You control the way you feel: Your ability to get motivated is not controlled by anything external. Sure, external things can motivate you for small hunks of time, but real lasting motivation is only achieved when you pull it out of yourself with a sustained, intentional action.

In summary, know exactly what you need to do, and know how to do it. Because if you think you need motivation and that motivation will come spark you on the face for inspiration to fly out to your forehead, you’re going to be waiting forever. Focus on these tips above and you will see yourself on the other side of self-actualisation!
