We tend to believe that exercise is meant for adults, especially those adults with body weight issues. So when we register for fitness classes, we are most likely not carrying the kids along.

Exercise is a healthy lifestyle that anybody can benefit from, young or old, overweight, underweight or fit.

By engaging your kids in exercises you get to improve their strength and endurance as you instil healthy habits into them.

Start thinking of healthy exercise for your children regardless of their age bracket. Listed are healthy exercise routines kids between the age of 5-13 can engage in.

Hula Hooping

Head to the garage for this one – or clear some space inside the house. Kids can exercise different parts of the body by hooping around their waists, arms, or legs. Another way to administer this exercise type is to lay hoops on the floor in patterns so kids can jump from one to another. To make it more competitive, have them hang their hoops all on the waist and count see who can roll their hoop the fastest.

Family Bicycling

Model some good behaviour. Lace up those biking shoes, pull out the bikes and have your kids hop on their bikes with you as you all take a turn round the compound. You don’t have to ride so far away from your house to achieve this; you can also try the estate where your kids can be safe. Children who see their parents being active are more likely to be active themselves. So encourage the biking behaviour.

Soccer Exercise

How about working out that sweat with the kids while engaging in one of the most popular sports on the planet? All you need do is find a field around you and have your kids dart around with you on the field. Trust me, it can be very engaging. To make it more interesting, you can invite your neighbours for a match on a weekend and see how that plays out.

Dancing

Not only does this get your kids to exercise which is the first goal, dance classes also offer your children exposure to structural physical activities such as leg raising, hand movements, ballerina waltz etc. They would also learn the value of discipline, commitment, self-confidence, collaboration and appreciation of arts and music.

Bouncing Ball Exercise

How fast can your kids bounce a ball? Find out in a room with space to move around. A perfect space and a cleared out space will enable free movement. Let kids try bouncing balls close to each other fast and slow. Gather a group and try to bounce balls in sync and see how interesting that can go.

For kids, exercise means playing and being physically active. Kids exercise when they have gym classes at school, but that isn’t enough.

Getting your kids involved in exercise in your own small ways will:

  • Help them have stronger muscles and bones
  • Have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat
  • Be less likely to become overweight
  • Decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • Have a better outlook on life
