I’m not one to shy away from using luxurious skin care products, because I know how great they make me feel and look. But sometimes, there’s no need to spend a large sum on products at an expensive store. Truth be told, the chemicals in a good number of these products – especially ones concerned with the face – do more harm than good in the long run. What’s the point of looking good today and suffering for it ten years down the line? Once in a while, it’s good to take your skin care matters into your own hands make your products yourself. You can find natural ingredients for face washes, scrubs, maks, and moisturizers right in your kitchen.

DIY Skin Care – What You Need

Raw Honey

If you have raw, unprocessed honey at home, then you have liquid gold. Yes, honey is a great substitute for sugar and spreads, but did you know it’s also a great rememdy for infected wounds? Honey can help moisturize your skin, as well as fight aging and bacteria. Plus, it’s loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, and healing compounds. Because honey naturally draws moisture from the air into the skin, it makes for a great facial mask. Spread raw honey on clean, dry skin with your fingertips like you would a facial cleanser. Leave on for 10-20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Honey ensures moisture is retained in the layers where it’s needed most for penetrating, long-lasting hydration.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

My beloved Nigerians, olive oil is not just good for annointing. This highly spiritualized oil is actually also really great for for your face. “But how?!”, you ask. I know the oily skin people are especially worried about this one, but fret not. Extra virgin olive oil is non-comedogenic – this means it won’t clog your pores and can be used as a moisturizer. Olive oil also contains vitamins A and E which fight aging and repair skin damage. Also, if you ever run out of makeup wipes, it’s very effective and gentle at removing makeup.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is one very versatile thing to have at home. You can use it to clean your toilet, bake, whiten your smile, and exfoliate your face. Baking soda, can be a cot-effective way to nourish, protect and heal your face. A simple baking soda face mask will remove dead skin cells, calm acne and rashes, balance overactive oil glands, kill a number of potentially destructive pathogens, and just make you feel better about your appearance. Of course, people wil react differently to using baking soda on their skin, so test it on your arm first to see if it works for you.

Sugar

Sugar may not be good for your waistlie and teeth, but it’s a wonderful addition to your skin care routine. Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, which encourages cell turnover and is used to treat sun-damaged and aging skin. Like honey, it’s also a natural humectant and can leave your skin feeling very hydrated and sugar’s small particles make it a great exfoliant. For a softer, less abrasive scrub you can always use brown sugar. For a scrub that leaves your skin feeling silky, combine ½ cup of white or brown sugar with ¼ cup of olive or coconut oil. Gently rub 1 tablespoon of the sugar scrub on your face and rinse well with warm water. Be sure to use this scrub only once or twice a week to avoid microscopic tears on your skin.

Tea Bags

You may not be able to eat your cake and have it, but your tea bags are a lot more versatile than you think. Iif you have puffy/tired eyes and dark circles beneath your eyes, chilled tea bags will help you treat them. Green tea especially contains caffeine and tannin which specialise in shrinking blood vessels. As a result of this, placing a green tea bag on your eyes will reduce swelling and tighten the skin around your eyes. Next time you brew a cup of tea, cool the bags and them place them over your closed eyes for about 15 minutes.
