Artificial Intelligence is proving more useful as more research is carried out into more possible uses. Tencent a Chinese tech giant and London medical firm Medopad have partnered to use artificial intelligence to diagnose Parkinson’s Disease.

The technology requires a patient to move their hands check how serious their symptoms are.

The team used existing video recordings of patients who have previously been assessed by doctors working with King’s College Hospital in London.

Head of the Tencent Medical AI lab Dr Wei Fan, stated: “We use the AI to measure the deterioration of Parkinson’s disease patients without the patient wearing any sensors or devices.”

The objective is to hasten a motor function evaluation process which normally takes more than 30 minutes.

Using smartphone technology developed by Medopad, the hope is that patients could be assessed within three minutes – and might not even have to attend a hospital.

“Our ambition is to impact a billion patients around the world – and to be able to get to that kind of scale we need to work with partners that have international reach,” he told me.

Studies are being carried out by researchers at Switzerland’s Institute for Robotics aiming at designing a smartphone app that will analyse results of various exercises done by patients through machine instructions.

Reportedly, 10 million people all over the world have Parkinson’s disease and there is the possibility that the number will increase because it is a disease that affects old people.

With improvements in AI, doctors can diagnose the disease and profer treatments that will relieve the symptoms.
