The show at Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week (HLFDW) definitely started on the street as the event had street style stars show up in their best, displaying their fashionable styles and perhaps setting some trends for the next fashion season.

Here’s a quick look at a few of our favourite trends we saw on the streets of HLFDW.

1. Statement outfits

Statement outfits have become the new informal introduction. Want to know who I am? Read my outfit! Literally!!

2. Traditional carry-ons

You need a purse or bag for your fashion week essentials and to still look stylish. Some stars pulled this off perfectly, going totally traditional with raffia purses and carry-ons.

3. Short shorts

Short shorts were a mini-trend with a number of guys rocking them comfortably. Perhaps guys would accept the male romper once and for all since they’re confident enough to rock short shorts.

4. Print on print

Fashion week in any part of Africa would not be fashion week if there isn’t a show of colourful coordinated print pieces.

5. Tied up belts

Where oversized clothing was not cut down to size, our street style stars accentuated their waists with belts. That’s a look!

6. The 90s looks

The 90s are making quite a dramatic comeback and our street style stars were not left out as some brought outfits and sunglasses from the past to the future.

7. Free the nipples

The guys especially bared it all at the event, freeing their nipples to be teased in the cool evening air at Eko Atlantic. Some also showed their skin under lace and other sheer fabric.

8. Ruffles, feathers, and fringe

Ruffles and fringes are going nowhere as it was a staple outfit during the event. These outfits reminded us strongly of peacocks showing their beautiful feathers off.

9. Asymmetric cuts

Clothes with structured and asymmetrical cuts did not start on the runway this year, they started from the streets.

10. Slay!

There were some oddities of the week, which still looked really good. Take for example this newspaper cutout dress that came to play in the finale. Also, this young photographer who caught our attention on every day of the event.
