Thrift shopping is one that hasn’t wholly accepted by a good number of people here. I think the Nigerian branded name ‘okrika’ or ‘bend down select’ is an added factor to this. It’s not yet a house hold activity, but I love the fact that thrift and second-hand shopping is becoming more in vogue, meaning that shoppers are becoming a little more conscious of how and where they spend their money, while recognizing that clothes don’t certainly lose all their value just because they were pre-owned.

A few days ago I commented on my friends outfit and she mentioned it was thrifted/bend-down select. I wasn’t wowed in the real sense of her wearing thrifted clothing but because she casually said it out loud which a lot of others wouldn’t do.

Personally, I love the idea of thrift shopping. While thrift shopping might make you feel your good, secondhand clothes don’t always make you look your best. Clothes that are worn, faded, out-of-season, and just plain cheap can give your secondhand secret away.I also wish it were easier and more organized here. That said, I would be sharing a few tips to make the most of thrift shopping.

1. Shop in the Right Area

One of the best ways to get the most for your money while thrift shopping is to make sure that you look out awell-off area. These areas mean good people, which increases the chance of finding quality goods, big brand labels, and better fabrics. Before going thrift shopping, especially if you need to travel a noteworthy distance to get there – call ahead to ask.

2.      Hunt for Quality Brands and Fabrics

Due to the low prices of thrift stores, it can be tempting to fill up your bag with impulse purchases. But before you buy that polyester certain things, remember that in the long run, high-quality clothes always look better than cheaper fabrics.Natural fibers always look best over time, even if they cost a bit more. Look out for cotton, linen, and leather, and avoid fabrics such as polyester, nylon, etc which can definitely look cheap and worn over time.

3.      Shop According to Trends

Head to a mainstream brand and take note of what’s trending. Do you see a lot of print? Is everyone going with bold accessories? Then, head to the thrift store and start looking for items that exemplify those trends. The point is, fashion is repeated: You might find a vintage print belt that is years even decades old, but totally current.

4.      Know What to Avoid

There are a few things that smart thrift shoppers pass over because they’ll always look cheap or clearly worn. By knowing what you should avoid when shopping, you won’t get stuck with clothing that is completely unwearable. In general, pass over these items: clothes with heavy embellishment, damaged clothes, clothes with heavy stains and smells.

5.      Launder Properly

Lastly, before you wear clothes from your thrift shopping experience, you should always launder properly.
