A bride in a black wedding dress isn’t very common I must admit. For the longest time, I’ve loved black as a color and mostly wondered why I never saw brides in black wedding dresses.

Black wedding dresses were worn centuries ago in different cultures. Vera Wang is famous for her black wedding dresses but back in the day, brides wore whatever color pleased them for their weddings or at least, dresses they already had.

The white wedding dress wasn’t famous until Queen Victoria shed some light on the trend as she wore one to her wedding in 1840. White wedding dresses became exclusive to the elite who could afford to spend as much on their wedding dress.

Interestingly, Catholic and Spanish brides wore black as a symbol of their devotion to marriage, ‘till death do us part’ which is a tad-bit romantic. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that black was perceived in a more negative notation, and associated with death and mourning and a color that meant disapproval of spouse and the likes of thoughts.

Today, we live in a little more liberated world in terms of people wearing what they want, when they want and how they want it and I begin to wonder! Would any future bride who claims to be different with their style as well as love black as ‘King’ of colors be caught wearing a black wedding dress?  Would we see more designers making even more beautiful black wedding dresses following in Vera Wang’s steps?
