From the Men’s Fashion Week Nigeria, Africa Fashion and Design Week which happened concurrently earlier in the month, to the Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week which came to a close yesterday, key members of the fashion industry have toured venues, taking stock and setting the trends for the year ahead. Because we take our cues from global fashion, here are five trends you should try out.

Statement jewellery

Statement earrings

In the spirit of full disclosure, statement jewellery never really goes out of style, but this season there was a resurgence of sorts. From Simone Rocha to Versace, designers churned out gigantic baubles that vie for as much attention as the clothes themselves. As clothing becomes more homogenous, statement jewellery is becoming a way for fashionistas to stand out. A great way to ease into this trend for fashion week is to try out statement earrings like these beauties from Raya Jewellery, available at Zazaii.

Statement Tees

Tzar statement t-shirt

As fashion becomes increasingly political, designers like Prabal Gurung and Maria Chiuri at Dior use slogans on tees as a direct way to send across messages while dressing their stylish clients. Maju, always on the wave, recently put out their versions of the ‘Feminist As Fuck’ logo tees, or Tzar Studios if you’re feeling a lot cheekier.

Baggy outerwear

Seyitan kimonos

Marc Jacobs literally annihilated the competition at New York Fashion Week with his Spring 18 collection that featured baggy outwear, jackets, shirts, and coats. There’s a certain refusal to depend on a silhouette that bleeds confidence. Quite a number of Nigerian brands are favouring oversized kimonos as a way of ensuring that pieces are both fashionable and functional. Abebibytan is a great entry point if you’re looking to supersize.

Athleisure

Athleisure

If you’re not really into playing dress up but you want to be in the spirit of fashion week and other festivities then you should definitely consider going the athleisure route. Athleisure takes on the sleekness and versatility of sportswear, not to mention its flattering shapes and silhouettes, and marries them with luxury, specifically the lush, high-quality fabric and construction. A good mid-range label to start dabbling in athleisure is Sanusi Lagos, whose brightly coloured jerseys, parkas, sweatpants, and windbreakers have made them a fashion circuit.

Geometric skirting

Structured Maju skirt

Structural pieces have become the de rigeur of fashion as more and more designers push themselves to find unconventional ways of presenting dress staples to new clients looking for uniqueness and originality. The skirt has become the new canvas on which these designers try out draping, boning and complex origami techniques. A great way to get into the geometric trend without damaging your wallet is this cute Maju skirt.

You have your trends boys and girls, now slay!
