Yellow is the colour that opens your wardrobe to every positive connotation: brightness, positivity, optimism, happiness and of course, all the good vibes from Big Bird on Sesame Street. Contrary to popular belief, not all hues complement the ultimate colour that there is, which is black. However, the colour yellow is one of the greatest compliments that could ever be paid to the black hue. As well as being the perfect combination with black, which may be all the convincing one needs, it is also a perfect ally to the colour blocking fashion that’s currently showing signs of resurfacing. Safe to say, this bright hue may not always be the easiest colour to pull off. Here are some tips for your styling needs:

Colour blocking

Fashionista and media babe, Bolanle Olukanni styling in a pair of yellow pants

Yellow is possibly the best base to style a colour-blocked outfit. Contrasting tones like oranges, pinks and magentas, work beautifully with yellow. Take notes from Bolanle Olukanni and style yellow pants with a bright magenta top, to give an easy feel, but not too easy once paired with stunning heels to amp up the sass.

Mix and match various tones and textures in yellow to achieve a non-overbearing look in this bold colour. Men in yellow suits are even more audacious. Remember, to achieve the monochromic look does not necessarily require using the same shade all through.

Accents of colour

A play on yellow accents is as effective as an effusive dose of yellow. Invest in scarves and pocket squares with visible yellow prints. Take notes, from style chief, Noble Igwe, on how to work a messenger bag in this colour against a darker shade.

Traditional wear

If you’re reading this, you probably can’t pinpoint why loud colours just look so much more tantalising in traditional wear. All colours could clash and you would still be welcomed and be considered acceptable. When all else fails, switch it up to your iro and buba, or kaftans to achieve the same effect.

If you are not one to invest in a spectrum of hues for your wardrobe, then this colour of the moment is just in with the right amount of flavour, pop, and pep. The colour yellow, like black, is one that possesses a universal appeal, regardless of the tone of your skin, and colour of your hair.
