Ghanaian Hip-hop recording artist, Michael Owusu Addo professionally known as Sarkodie has slammed the Ghanaian government over its plan to build a new parliament, which will cost about N72 billion ($200m).

Sarkodie in his reaction described the move of the proposed new Parliamentary complex as a misplaced priority considering that the country and her citizens are facing lots of challenges.

The Parliamentary is expected to have a 450 sitting capacity, house facilities including diplomatic offices, a library, a museum, a church, a mosque, eateries, press conference rooms, galleries, a car park, an upper gallery garden, and a post office. The present chamber will be converted into a conference room, as confirmed by the architect, Sir David Adjaye.

Taking to his Twitter page to criticize the move, he also lamented that both National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party governments have failed the Ghanaian citizens. In his tweets, he wrote,

“Politics and politicians will always be the same till the people change and become one putting this whole NDC NPP on the side and tackle issues together …If All these potholes on the motorway and other roads in Ghana causing accidents can be overlooked to raise 200mil for a chamber then yall know the kinda people we choose to be in power. Every project should target the betterment of the people first.

Sarkodie’s contributions to the Ghanaian Music Industry have earned him numerous awards and in 2015, he was ranked the 19th most Influential Ghanaian by e.tv Ghana while MTV Base ranked him sixth on its list of the Hottest African MC’s in 2014. In 2013, Lynx TV ranked him first on its list of the “Top 10 Ghanaian Rappers of All Time while in 2015, AfricaRanking.com ranked him third on its list of the “Top 10 African Rappers of 2015”. Sarkodie recently won the “Artists of the Decades” Award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2019.
