Outrage As Burna Boy Declares Himself The Best Since Fela

Attention from fans and admirers can be likened to fire; one minute it is the flame lifting your hot air balloon, the next minute it is fire in which you’re roasting.
Two weeks after losing the Grammy Award in the best world music category to Angelique Kidjo, Nigerian artist Burna Boy has sparked an outrage on social media as he declares himself the best since Fela Kuti.
In what seems to be an outpour, Burna Boy took to his Twitter page Wednesday night to tweet about people he perceived to be pretentious:
“The same people that wish you the best to your face are the same people that hope and pray you Fail so that they can feel better about themselves. That’s just Life. That’s why complements mean nothing to me cuz hate, Jealousy and “it shoul have been me” are sugar coated by them.”

In a second tweet, the “African Giant” singer declared himself the best since Fela Kuti, the pioneer of Afrobeat whose work serves as the foundation to Burna Boy’s career as well as his contemporaries.
“FACT! I always knew I was and I am THE BEST. Everyone you think is the best KNOWS I’m BEST since Fela Kuti. But @timayatimaya told me something a long time ago that made me not care about being the best. “The World can do without the Best” the world will still spin regardless.”

That declaration didn’t go down well with a Twitter user who questioned where Burna Boy had been all along before Afrobeats became a globally acclaimed genre.
“Where were you since 2010-2018? I mean where the f**k are you when Afrobeat was struggling to hit the mainstream? The BEST paved the way for you. You came In when the table has already been set and here you’re claiming the BEST since Fela.”
Before Burna Boy, there had been Wizkid, Davido, D’banj, 2Baba and a host of others whose music have brought the global spotlight on Nigeria.
However, Burna Boy in his reply believes every man was only working for himself and that it was his arrival to the scene that changed the global perspective of Nigeria.

Although Burna Boy came to prominence in 2012 after releasing “Like to Party”, the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E (2013), he, however, got international attention in 2018 when online searches for Kanye West’s “Ye” album mistakenly led to Burna Boy’s similarly titled single.
