Five One-Hit Wonders

Every now and then, an awesome track by an upcoming musician hits the airwaves and becomes the rave. In the blink of an eye, these tracks are replaced by newer tracks and these artists are gone with the wind with no track to compare to that initial hit. This is a list of one-hit wonders and the songs they never recovered from.

Djinee

Djinee

In 2004, if you hadn’t listened to Ego by Djinee, chances are that you were living under a rock. Even at that, this lover’s anthem that was played at weddings and proposals has gone on to become one of the country’s classic love songs. Although Djinee released other songs like I no dey shame and also featured in a couple of songs by Chocolate City, he never did get back to creating a hit like Ego.

J’odie

Jodie

Kuchi Kuchi hit the airwaves in 2010 and J’odie’s soulful ballad to her kid was the anthem for mothers and lovers who connected with the track. The finalist from West African Idols, was nominated for numerous awards due to the success of the song and the visuals created. J’odie recently revealed in an interview with Linda Ikeji TV, that she has kept a low profile due to her life-threatening childbirth experience, her son being diagnosed with cerebral palsy and taking care of a special needs child.

W4

W4

Omoge wa gba control! W4 was the man of 2012 although this song was released in 2010. One of the catalysts to the success of this track was the fuel subsidy which made protesting Nigerians creative as they sang “Wa gba petrol” during their campaign. The artist tried coming back into the scene in 2014 with his single Foreign Dance which didn’t get any traction.

TY Bello

TY Bello

Bello is a continuous hit as a visual artist but as a musician, she never really did recover from hit track Greenland. After the split from girl group KUSH, she went on a solo journey as an artist and released a number of albums. Greenland in 2007 became the national anthem for Nigerians as it gave everyone a sense of unity and hope. She has released more tracks since then but none can compare to the impact of her hit track Greenland.

Bigiano

Bigiano

In 2008, Bigiano was the “Shayo master”, his hit single Shayo was played in the clubs, on the radio and every party in the country. He left the scene and according to him, “When the fame of Shayo came, I couldn’t handle it. I deliberately made the decision to go off the scene in 2011 to re-position my brand.” Although he staged a comeback in 2015 with two new tracks, he never could recover the grounds he got with his initial hit track.
