Today is World Smile Day. Like yesterday, which was Do Something Nice Day in the US,  this is a day when you do a random act of kindness, especially to people you do not know, and give them a reason to smile.

Whether it’s a simple “hi”, a smile or an honest compliment, we should try to do something nice for other people as often as possible. This will not only bring happiness to others, but also to yourself as it will leave you feeling like you’ve done a little good in this world filled with disasters and crises.

A little show of kindness can go a long way. We have all been in positions where we needed help or just a smile and someone brightened our day by giving us what we needed without even knowing it.

Here are a few random ways you can show a little kindness to someone. You never know, your kindness could be all they need to make their day better.

1. Smile

As simple as this gesture may be, it can go a long way towards brightening someone’s day. So smile, beautiful one.

2. Give

Everyone loves free things, yes. But when these things come unexpectedly, it can make you feel so good! Pay for the next person while driving through a toll gate. Donate the things you know you don’t need to an orphanage or just give a blanket or a pack of food to a homeless person you pass by on your way to work every day.

3. Appreciate

Pay compliments easily and try to be as honest as you can. Write a note by hand to thank someone in your life who deserves appreciation. Or just acknowledge someone’s service. Let them know you see the good things they’re doing and it will encourage them to do more.

4. Reach out

Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Ask how they are doing. Listen to them. Hug someone that looks like they are going through hard times.

5. Be caring

Put others in your shoes and think of the things you could do to make life easier. It could be as simple as driving slowly when it is raining to avoid drenching pedestrians with water.

6. Bargain less

Do not haggle too much with sellers you know struggle to make a living by petty trading. It won’t cost you much to forfeit change when you know you can do away with it.

7. Greet

Greet those around you, from the man who opens the door for you to your colleagues. Ask them how they are doing. Say something nice.

8. Offer help

Offer to help someone in need. Offer to help someone carry a heavy load. Give up your seat on the bus for a pregnant woman or someone carrying a child or an elderly person when you can.

9. Share your music

You know that song that lifts your spirits when you’re down? Or that playlist that never fails to make you want to just get up and dance? Recommend it to or share it with someone who has a similar taste in music.

10. Inspire someone

Post a funny video on Facebook. When you come across something you know will inspire someone, send it to them. Leave random notes saying things like “You’re doing great, sweetie” in a library. It will certainly brighten someone’s day.

So go on, be encouraged to do a kind act and help someone smile not only today, but also every day of your life.
