The world is filled with mind-blowing historical sites. Over the thousands of years of human history, many breathtaking and incredible historical sites have been built through ancient civilizations.

In this article, we look at just a few out of the world’s many historical sites you should visit… if you haven’t already!

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat which means “temple city” was built between roughly A.D. 1113 and 1150. It encompasses an area of about 500 acres (200 hectares) and is one of the largest religious monuments ever constructed.

Originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, it was converted into a Buddhist temple in the 14th century, and statues of Buddha were added to its already rich artwork. Sometime later it was turned into a military fortification. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that scientists are struggling to preserve.

Its 213-foot-tall (65 meters) central tower is surrounded by four smaller towers and a series of enclosure walls, a layout that recreates the image of Mount Meru, a legendary place in Hindu mythology that is said to lie beyond the Himalayas and be the home of the gods.

Agra, India

Agra is a city in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state. It is home to the iconic Taj Mahal, a mausoleum built for the Mughal ruler Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

The imposing main building features a massive dome and intricately carved white marble inlaid with precious stones. This is set behind a reflecting pool inside a courtyard defined by four minarets. The Taj Mahal is often considered to be the world’s best example of Mughal architecture

However, the city offers an abundance of historical architecture for the history buff. Remnants of the Mughal Dynasty and one-time Indian capital of Fatehpur Sikri still linger like ghosts in this thriving city.
