Recently, there have been wider discourses on feminine health, growth and female empowerment around the world. It is in line with this that The Conversation Café founder, Chisom Ogbummuo  announces the release of ‘HER,’ a short film spotlighting the real life stories of girls and women facing immense adversity in economically disadvantaged communities across Africa.

The 30-minute film focuses on the issue of ‘period poverty’ across poor communities in Africa, whereby girls and women cannot afford female sanitary products to deal with menstruation such as sanitary pads and tampons. It also delves into ancillary issues like institutionalized corruption in the armed forces, child labor, child marriage, pedophilia, rape and lack of access to quality education.

Speaking about her inspiration for the project, ‘HER’ producer Chisom Ogbummuo said:

“I was inspired to create this project when I walked into a bukka in Lagos one day and I discovered that the teenage girl serving me was visibly bleeding due to her menstrual cycle. I was shocked when I asked her what was going on and I found out that she and other girls in her community cannot afford sanitary pads or tampons. I realized that nobody has ever created any kind of visually engaging material to deal with this topic, so I decided to create this project to tell these stories because it is important for them to be heard.”

On August 1st, 2019, there will be an exclusive screening featuring the cast, crew, stakeholders and representatives of vital organizations involved in dealing with the problems addressed in the movie. The Premiere will hold at Alliance française de Lagos/The Mike Adenuga Centre.

The Conversation Cafe will also officially launch its sanitary bank where people and organizations can donate hygienic sanitary products like pads and tampons, deodorants, bathing soaps, detergents, hand sanitizers, disposable bags for onward distribution to girls and women in very low-income communities, rural communities, and IDP camps.

Following the premiere, the movie will commence its public viewing tour on August 13. It will be screened at over five hundred schools, festival, conferences and youth led gatherings in Africa and around the world.
