Fans of the Mustang series were in for a surprise at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show at Bullitt as Ford surprised those in attendance with a video confirming that the Mustang GT500 is on its way. This car will reawaken the long-standing rivalry between Ford and their contemporaries Dodge as the Dodge Challenger can be fitted with a 700 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque engine.

Many details about the car are still being kept under wraps, however, it’s been confirmed that the car will pack more than 700 horsepower. The car will take its place right above the Mustang Shelby GT350 in the series.

The first Shelby GT500 was unveiled in 1967 and the car had half the horsepower of this one. Back then, Shelby Mustangs were made by Shelby using Mustangs supplied by Ford and although Shelby still does this, those cars are not considered to be Ford production cars.

The last model the Shelby Mustang GT500 model was unveiled in 2014—for release in 2015, it had a 5.8-liter supercharged V8, 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. That version of the Mustang had a top speed of 202 miles per hour although, with the 700+ announcement, these stats are definitely going to change with the new model.

The car will arrive in 2019.
