Lagos is not exactly a place where the people have imbibed the coffee culture, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw the number of cars parked at Vestar Coffee, I made a mental note to visit again out of curiosity. Vestar Coffee is located at 26A, Oju Olobun Close, Off Bishop Oluwole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

When I walked in, I thought that the owner(s) must have had Starbucks in mind. It had a cool ambience with a jazzy feel and it didn’t have the popular rich and bitter smell of coffee. Instead, it had a rather sweet aroma. The décor was a balance of formal and informal and the baristas (coffee attendants) were pleasant. The shelves were decorated with games such as Scrabble, Chess and Monopoly and travel books.

It also had a backdoor bamboo stick designed seat out which consisted of a patio and cosy chairs for smokers. I placed an order for their special, popcorn latte.

Arabian coffee delight

The popcorn latte coffee had a rather sweet taste. I decided to try it with and without sugar, which was great. Although the cube of brown sugar I later added didn’t melt as quickly as I wanted it to, it was just the right amount. “What we serve here is Arabian coffee”, a barista later told me. I also tried out the hazelnut macchiato and I felt like it was better than the popcorn latte which they prized as their special as well as had a better presentation.

Pastries goodness

They had a variety of pastries ranging from blueberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies, jam doughnuts, banana bread, brownies, sausages and cinnamon rolls to chicken salad. Because of my love for almonds, I chose the almond croissant and the cinnamon roll. The yummy almond croissant consisted of almonds, almond paste and rum. The cinnamon roll was a little too sweet, perhaps ideal for a sweet tooth.

Verdict

It was a delightful experience from the ambience and service to the pastries and coffee. It was worth every penny and is ideal if you want to work from a cool space.
